STEERING

Yacht steering service: Dometic Optimus EPS electronic power steering, hydraulic systems, joystick docking and autopilot integration

What It Is

Steering is the most direct conversation between a captain and the vessel. Modern yacht steering combines hydraulic helm pumps, steering cylinders, rudder stocks and bearings with electronic power steering and autopilot integration — translating a fingertip on the wheel or joystick into the precise movement of rudders or drives working against tons of water pressure.

Today the state of the art is steer-by-wire, and for that the Dometic / Sea-Star Optimus EPS platform replaces cumbersome hydraulic runs to the helm with smart electronics, delivering what Dometic calls a boat that steers like a sports car. But there are other outstanding brands that are providing the yacht builders with high tech / top of the line products and systems, such as Slepiner, CMC Marine, Jefe Steering, BCS Steering, Kobelt, Uflex, Utraflex, Lewmar, Edson, Hypro Marine, Vetus, Lecomble & Schmitt, Quick, Xenta, Jastram Engineering and Accu-Steer.

The Dometic Optimus EPS Platform

As a Dometic dealer, Bravo Yacht Services installs and services the full Optimus range. The all-electric Optimus EPS suits single to quad outboard boats, center consoles, sport fishers, RIBs and catamarans with no oil at the helm, speed-sensitive wheel effort, adjustable turns lock-to-lock, and plug-and-play drive-by-wire autopilot compatibility with Garmin, Simrad and Raymarine. It can even be retrofitted to existing mechanically controlled engines. For inboard and sterndrive vessels, electro-hydraulic Optimus EPS is offered in configurations for boats under 40 feet up to 100 feet, cruisers, sportfishing yachts and performance motor yachts. It provides individual rudder control, multiple levels of redundancy over a fault-tolerant CAN network, support for up to three helm stations, automatic battery management, and a color dash display showing rudder command and position. The Optimus 5000 Series carries RINA certification for European yacht builders.

Precision Docking: Optimus 360 Joystick

The Optimus 360 joystick adds a whole new dimension of low-speed control for outboard boats: push the joystick to walk the boat sideways, twist it to rotate on a dime, and let intelligent programming minimize shifting during the maneuver. It integrates with existing electronic shift-and-throttle controls and is available as a retrofit or with new engine installations, turning the most stressful minute of every trip into the easiest.

Why Maintenance Matters

Traditional steering degrades quietly: air drawn into hydraulic lines makes the helm spongy, worn seals let fluid weep away, and rudder bearings and glands wear until play develops that the autopilot must constantly fight. Electronic systems add their own discipline,  software updates, CAN network diagnostics, sensor calibration and connector inspection in the damp spaces where electronics live. Annual fluid checks, bleeding, seal inspection, rudder-gear alignment and EPS system diagnostics keep the helm tight and responsive; and because steering is genuinely safety-critical, redundancy checks and emergency steering tests belong in every maintenance plan rather than being discovered offshore.

The Difference You Feel On Board

A precise helm changes every voyage. Owners and guests feel it as a yacht that tracks straight, turns with sports-car smoothness and docks sideways at the push of a joystick. Captains feel it most in the moments that matter: threading a tight marina, holding a heading in a following sea, or trusting the autopilot on an overnight passage. When steering is installed, calibrated and serviced properly, that trust is absolute, and the entire vessel is safer and calmer for it.
