What It Is
Modern passerelles are telescopic or folding structures in aluminum, stainless steel or carbon fiber, driven hydraulically or electro-mechanically, often rotating and self-leveling, and commanded from a wireless remote. Many double as davits or swim ladders or multi-functions. Hydraulic swim ladders extend the same engineering below the waterline: telescoping steps that emerge from the platform at the push of a button and vanish when the swim is over. Why Maintenance Matters
A gangway concentrates wear in small, hidden places: slide bushings and wear pads, pivot pins under full load, telescopic sections where salt collects, seals on compact cylinders, and control electronics living in a wet locker. Wear shows up first as sag, shudder or drift, and eventually as a gangway that fails with someone on it. Annual inspection of pins and bushings, seal service, lubrication of sliding surfaces and testing of remotes and safety stops keeps a boarding bridge as rigid and reliable as it looked at delivery.
