Two architectures dominate. Direct-expansion (DX) systems place compact self-contained units near each cabin, each with its own compressor and seawater-cooled condenser simple, efficient and the standard for yachts into the 60-70 foot range. Chilled-water plants, the choice of larger yachts > 80 feet, centralize refrigeration in staged compressor-chiller units that cool a fresh-water loop; quiet air handlers in every cabin then draw from that loop, giving precise zone-by-zone control, built-in redundancy when one stage rests, and no refrigerant lines running through guest spaces.
Engineering That Matters
The details separate a good installation from a great one. Modern variable-capacity and soft-start compressors cut start-up loads and let generators breathe easier. Correctly sized seawater pumps, strainers and scoops feed the condensers that do the real work. Humidity management, as important as temperature in the tropics, depends on properly matched capacity: an oversized system short-cycles and leaves the air cold but clammy, while a properly engineered one wrings the moisture out. Why Maintenance Matters
Marine air conditioning lives or dies on its seawater side. Condenser coils scale and foul with marine growth in warm Florida water, strainers load up, pump impellers shed vanes, and every lost percentage of heat rejection arrives precisely during the hottest month, when the system runs around the clock. The air side quietly compounds it: clogged filters and coils choke airflow, and blocked condensate drains become the source of the musty odor and mold no charter guest forgives. Add refrigerant charges that drift, contactors and capacitors that age, and controls that need updating, and the case for a schedule is simple: annual condenser descaling, strainer and impeller service, coil and drain cleaning, refrigerant and electrical checks, performed before the season, not during it. The alternative is an emergency call in August, a sweltering boat full of guests, and humidity doing silent damage to joinery, fabrics and art.
